Registration rules differ between countries, but the steps are similar almost everywhere.
1. Customs clearance
The car is declared to customs in your country, duty and import VAT are paid, and you receive proof of clearance.
2. Technical approval
Your registration office checks that the car meets local rules, usually with the Certificate of Conformity (CoC). Without a CoC, some countries ask for an individual approval, which takes longer and costs more.
3. Roadworthiness test
Many countries require a local technical inspection before first registration, even if the car recently passed the Swiss MFK.
4. Registration and plates
With the customs proof, the cancelled Swiss registration certificate, the purchase invoice and the technical documents, you register the car and receive local plates.
