Inspection checklist for a used car in Switzerland

What to check before buying a used car in Switzerland: papers, chassis number, salt corrosion, accident repairs, service history and test drive.

Updated:

This is the checklist we use when we inspect a car for a client. You can use it too if you go and see a car yourself.

Papers

  • Chassis number on the car matches the registration certificate
  • Seller is the registered owner, or has the owner’s authorisation
  • The car is not under a leasing contract
  • Date of the last official inspection

Body and underbody

  • Panel gaps, paint thickness and overspray, which reveal repairs
  • Corrosion on the underbody, brake lines and subframes, because of winter salt
  • Glass, lights and the condition of wheels

Mechanics

  • Cold start, idle and unusual noises
  • Leaks under the engine and gearbox
  • Brakes, tyres and their age
  • Warning lights and stored fault codes

History

  • Service book and invoices compared with the mileage
  • Number of previous owners
  • Accident history as declared by the seller

Test drive

Steering, gear changes, brakes and driver assistance systems, when the seller allows a drive.
